In the summer of 1994, I took a trip to see a game in all of the
major league baseball stadiums. I had wanted to do this since I was a
teenager. I was working for Claris at the time, and every five years,
Claris/Apple gives their employees a sabbatical.
So I set about planning. The scheduling was a nightmare, so I wrote a
program to calculate the route. Basically, I did a travelling
salesman algorithm. I don't have the final version anymore, but I
have something close. Anyway, I ran in on an RS/6000, and after a
week, a solution popped out.
I left on May 22, 1994 and got home on August 5. Seven days later,
the strike hit. Good timing, eh? I drove 20, 548.2 miles in my 1988
Acura Legend L. Most of the way, I had my video camera on a tripod in
a seat next to me, and I would flip it on when I thought something
was interesting.
Over half the nights on my trip, I stayed with relatives, friends and
their relatives and friends. I want to thank all of the people who
tolerated my presence on the trip. You made it possible. I especially
want to thank those who went to the games with me.
